All booked up!
Vaccinations sorted…
We’re now sorted for Yellow Fever, Hep A, Typhoid, Polio, Tetanus and Diptheria… Just have to decide about Malaria.
Sandra managed to get some “cheap” pills (€2.97 for a box of 10) from Portugal (she has a canny eye for a bargain!) but me, well I got my GP to write me a prescription (at a cost of £15!) for 43 Mefloquine tablets (basically Larium) for £2.17 per pill! - that’s a lot of pills to be taking non-stop for 10+ months! So I’m a bit concerned if any of the horror stories ring true (…severe depression, anxiety, paranoia, aggression, nightmares, insomnia, seizures etc - hmmm lovely!).
I guess I’ll try the pills, because wherever I go I get bitten good and proper, no matter how much Jungle Formula I use! and Malaria just doesn’t sound like much fun.
Any advice will be greatly appreciated!!
UPDATE
In the end we both decided to stop taking the Larium and concentrate on prevention. So we have stocked up on Jungle formula and other insect repellents. Also we got hold of some Ching Hao powder (Artemisin) from china town, after some interesting info about Artemisin from my neighbours, cheers Julia and Nick! As well as this, which you are supposed to take daily, we also picked up some Artesunate pills from a Pharmacy in Mozambique. This is a derivative of Artemisin and is to be taken should you get Malaria. So fingers crossed, should we be unfortunate to get it hopefully we have the ammunition to nip it in the bud straight away! Thanks to all who gave us invaluable advice.
